The Ultimate Engagement and Communication Tool

Last week I received an email which I found slightly bizarre. It told me:

‘The Employee Engage App is the ultimate engagement and communication tool, revolutionising the way that you motivate, engage and reward your employees.’

I can’t help feeling that this is a convenient way for employers to feel as if they’re engaging their staff by using a shiny new alternative to email. It seems to me that they’re failing to using the real ultimate engagement and communication tool: themselves. Their presence, their voice, their personality. They may not have much of the last one, which is why they think using this get fit quick* device will solve all their problems.

*something that claims to make exercise easier. The point of exercise is that the harder you work, the more you achieve.  Just like communication (and everything else, for that matter). If you don’t make the effort then you won’t see good results.

Feel the Burn

If you want to motivate your staff, sending a mass message to their phone demonstrates how little you’re committing to genuine communication. This remote version has no personal connection and no risk of direct feedback. How brave of you.

Don’t try the easy route. If you want to improve your communication, use the fundamental tools of human connection: eye contact, emotion and some of that clever smiling thing you’ve heard so much about.

Go. Communicate.
