James Bond: Imbecile

Incendiary Opening Statements to Catch Your Attention

  1. I love James Bond. I also believe he’s the worst spy ever.
  2. I think Skyfall M is fantastic. She’s also clearly incompetent.
  3. MoneyPenny’s assertive. But almost kills James. Oops.

Validation of Those Statements in an Attempt to Seem Credible and Useful

It’s OK to feel conflicting responses to your heroes; they’re only human, after all.

Here’s why I said those things and how they’re relevant to you as an aspiring speaking hero:

  1. James Bond can’t help but tell everyone who he is – what’s worse is that they already know anyway. Speaking different languages? Naaah. A disguise or two? Why bother? Well done James, brilliant espionage skills. What you (dear reader) should do, however, is to celebrate your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Write down the things you’re actually good at and enjoy, and make sure you’re known for those things. The areas you’re less comfortable with? Don’t mention them unless asked directly – but work on improving them.
  2. M’s loyalty and pity affect her judgement; she puts James back in the field even though he’s clearly a wreck and a huge risk. Tut tut. In your line of work though, which – and I’m going to make a massive assumption here – probably isn’t espionage, showing some heart and compassion is a highly commendable quality. Helping someone because you feel it’s right will make you stand out in a good way, even if (or even better, because) it contradicts the rulebook.
  3. Moneypenny decides to “take the bloody shot” (a direct order from M – oh dear) and nearly kills Bond. On the other hand, she shows no fear in a gunfight and is ready to get her hands dirty in the field. Showing that you’re ready to lead from the front and do the boring, hard stuff like everyone else can really inspire your colleagues. Get over yourself and get on with it – others will follow.

Stirring Conclusion to Inspire and Motivate

Look, they’re all heavily flawed, but ultimately achieve great things – just like you can. Want to speak with confidence and impress people? You can definitely achieve this, but only by applying yourself, developing your skills and ultimately proving yourself.
