Not fitting in can be bad. But being different is really, really good – it makes you interesting.
Being Different
No plant by definition is a weed; it’s a label with no scientific basis, depending entirely on whether the plant is ‘desirable’ by someone for that particular location, and just means ‘doesn’t fit in according to an arbitrary set of criteria’. Different people have different criteria: a wise boss may see you as an oddball, but if your colleagues love you for that very reason, then they’ll let it go (and may even encourage you).
Much like a weed, I haven’t fitted in in* various structured environments in my life. I’ve had no problems with people, but where I’ve needed to be part of the system such as at school I don’t think things worked as well for me as they could have.
* those two ‘in’s are entirely correct, even though they look wrong (proves my point, really).
The Right Environment
Stand-up comedy, however, was somewhere where* not only could I be different, but where being different was vital for success. Much like a wild area of a garden, where ‘undesirable’ plants are allowed to flourish to create a rich environment in which wildlife can thrive, stand-up comedy attracts the unconventional to indulge their unusual nature to create a highly desirable outcome.
* those two ‘where’s are also fine. Ease back, you conformist.
My current role – where I’m teaching people to enjoy verbal communication such as presenting and networking – is a similarly unconventional activity (and, crucially, a self-created role). Even within the realm of communication coaches, I believe my offering is unique. But then I would, wouldn’t I?.
Turn It Around
So, the next time you feel out of place or inadequate, consider this: being unique and interesting is possibly the most important asset you have. Revel in it, and have fun with it. Turn those weak qualities into powerful tools to help you stand out from the crowd.
