I loathe uninventive, predictable talks, delivered by boring characters with little enthusiasm.
I love original, surprising talks, delivered by unusual characters who love their subject, know it inside out and want to show how fascinating it is.
You have to care what you’re talking about when you’re trying to sell something – Simon Sinek’s ‘Start with Why’ explains this beautifully.
Whenever you communicate, you’re trying to sell something, right? You want the listener to be persuaded:
- to buy something, or
- to buy into something
…to do something that they would not have done before your presentation/conversation/email/two minute chat at the water cooler.
Show some emotion. Show your anger, joy, fear, whatever it is that motivates you. If you move your audience they will join your cause. Marvellous.
