Boooooring
I see a lot of predictable nonsense: presentations, emails and adverts that need a good kick up the arse to make them interesting. They need a story. But what makes a good story?
Trouble/Drama/Conflict
Everyone has bad days, and has had to deal with events they wish had never happened, things that bring them down and make their life a misery. But I think people often deal with them the wrong way, by:
- Thinking that their problems are worse than everyone else’s. You’ve got it better than a lot of other people, and you know it. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get back on the metaphorical horse.
- Thinking that each experience will remain indefinitely as a painful memory.
Spread the Love
However, whatever issues you encounter in your life, there is a positive aspect, something that you can put to very good use:
Telling people about it afterwards.
Which brings us to stories and interesting communication. Might seem a bit odd to tell people about something unpleasant that’s happened to you, but it can be really effective, and here’s why:
- It makes you human! Yes, you have the same problems as everyone else and they can relate to that.
- It’s funny! That day where it all went horribly wrong is grotesquely uncomfortable at the time, but in hindsight can be very amusing indeed.
Conclusion
Use all the bad experiences as a positive force in your life by showing others that you are a dedicated, hard-working problem-solver who has overcome adversity and lived to tell the tale.
