My company (an odd term; it’s only me) has been going for four years. Some kind of special celebration is in order, isn’t it?
Not really, it’s business as usual. Another day of utter heroism as I swing between joy and fear, while drinking tea. This is a post of the usual length, but it’s actually a bonus; the next ‘Presentation Fails and How to Fix Them’ post and video will be published in an hour or two. Lucky you.
Here are a few things I’ve achieved over the past four years which I’m thoroughly proud of:
- The creation of a training format, material and style which really works (yay)
- Regular blog posts
- PechaKucha Cambridge (with Colin Ramsay) – we do it gratis but it’s a joy
- The ‘Presentation Fails and How to Fix Them’ video series – also for free but, like Pechakucha, feels absolutely right
…and here are a few things in the pipeline:
- My book – a choose your own adventure style thang
- My Udemy course – more presentation advice/goodness
Conclusion
Right. Here are the most important lessons I’ve learnt:
- Organise your time – having a schedule (even one you break) is vital (‘plans are useless, but planning is indispensable’ – Eisenhower)
- Be yourself – ‘professional’ can easily equate to ‘boring’
- Do the stuff you love – you’re probably good at it (or will become so)
- Do free stuff – create different ways for people to interact with you (see Daniel Priestley’s ‘KPI’)
- Read Seth Godin’s posts – he’s wise and concise (a rare combination these days)
