Reveal Yourself

Novice public speakers ask me what the key is to confidence, and the simple answer is that it’s a result of applying yourself to the various aspects involved, many of which I give advice about in other posts on this blog. In short, there is no simple answer, because there’s no easy solution, there’s no one thing that will magically take you there. Sorry.

But here’s one that can really help with public speaking, when used alongside all the advice in my other posts.

And that’s revealing your true nature. I know, sounds dangerous, right? Well, sometimes, to gain the audience’s trust, you have to reveal your unique characteristics – both vulnerabilities and strengths – to allow them to make a connection to you (see my post ‘Building Character’ on discovering these qualities)

Apparently some animals show each other their neck when meeting for the first time, to establish the relationship. Try ‘sticking your neck out’ when doing public speaking in front of a group and see how you gain their trust. Crucially, if you’re prepared to show your vulnerability, you can become very likable indeed.
