The Kung Fu of Presentation, Part One: The Philosophy

Martial arts philosophy and my public speaking philosophy have huge parallels, which you will see from the rest of my blog:

  • Adaptability (see my post ‘Be Like Water’).
  • Flow, with unconscious competence (see my post ‘Kung Fu Candour’).

Going on-stage can be a form of combat, where – and this may seem deep, but you’re not here for easy solutions – your greatest opponent may be yourself, your own shortcomings and your fear of them. It’s only by throwing yourself at this fear, tackling it head-on, that you have the greatest effect in overcoming it.

Approach any public speaking opportunity like a challenge that requires your dedication and hard work, and you’ll see that:

  1. Preparation is key.
  2. It’s to be respected, not feared.

This blog is inspired by my stand-up comedy experience, but there are no jokes this time. Read all the advice from my blog that works for you, ignore what doesn’t, and give yourself enough time to apply it fully.
