When people think of confident speakers, they often imagine big gestures, strong voices, or powerful words. However, the real power often sits in the silence between the words.
Most people rush. They speak too fast because their brain is racing ahead: worrying about what’s coming next, how they sound, or how people are judging them.
The pause feels uncomfortable, like a spotlight shining on their insecurity, but for the listener, that pause is gold.
⏸️ It gives them time to absorb what you just said.
⏸️ It makes you sound calm, deliberate, and in control.
⏸️ It exudes confidence.
Here’s a simple way to practise it: when you next speak – in a meeting, a pitch, or a presentation – find one key sentence. Deliver it cleanly, then stop.
▪️ Let it land. Count to two in your head. Smile at your audience.
▪️ It will feel waaay too long (it always does). But to your audience, it sounds perfect.
▪️ Continue.
I’ve coached hundreds of professionals, from engineers to executives, and this is a huge (yet simple) piece of advice. The pause is powerful because it transforms nerves into presence, information into impact, and it’s free – no slides, no tricks, no gimmicks. Just you, your voice, and a little silence.
Pause: it’s the ultimate way to control the room.
