Fight For Your Write

Where do you find your inspiration for writing? It takes serious discipline to be able to quickly switch into the right frame of mind to produce good material.

Apparently Sean Lock (an excellent comic, you may have seen him on ‘8 Out of 10 Cats’ or ‘QI’) used to separate ‘work’ from ‘home’ by leaving the house in the morning and walking round the block. When he got home again he started ‘work’. At the end of the day he would walk round the block again. This time when he returned, he arrived ‘home’.

I find that a good desk and music via headphones (and perhaps a caffeine-based drink) provide me with the conditions to write well. As I’m writing this, I’m working at my desk at home and I’m listening to the soundtrack for ‘The Dark Knight Rises’*, so everything’s just as I like it.

(Whatever musical genre you favour, I highly recommend the ‘TDKR’ soundtrack. I find it rather dramatic and inspiring.)

When I started writing this blog, I was worried I would soon dry up. However, this is my 78th post, and to be honest I feel like I’m just getting started. Yes, some posts have covered similar ground; my post ‘Write This Down, You Muthas‘ mentions a simple technique for generating good material (have a look, it’s one of favourite posts, and includes a quote from LL Cool J), so relates perfectly to this, but I haven’t reproduced any of it here.

So, keep writing every day, and with a bit of luck you’ll find it easier, and enjoy it even more.

Simple, really.
