Apparently the quote “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” has been incorrectly interpreted. While the meaning we have – “Even a huge task can be broken into achievable parts” – the original meaning was “A huge action must be preceded by stillness.”
I think taking time for a mental break is very important; I usually feel I’m achieving more by doing lots of tasks in parallel and/or in rapid succession without ever pausing, and using my mobile phone constantly is a big part of that. But I’ve realised that without occasionally taking time to reflect, I’m messing up the true route to effectiveness, which comes from calmness.
‘We’re Creating a Culture of Distraction’ by Joe Kraus is a fantastic (despite its spelling errors) piece about why we should put our phones away and focus on being in the moment. It’ll take about three minutes to read, but give it a go.
That’s if your brain can focus for that long, you multi-tasking genius.
