You’re Better Than A.I.

I love science fiction. In particular, I love its robots*. My top three are K-2SO from ‘Rogue One’, Bishop from ‘Aliens’ and Ultron from the MCU.

They are physical representations of A.I., something currently at the start of a revolution in which many job roles may be replaced by a faster, cheaper and more efficient system. Just like the industrial revolution in the 18th century, great change is coming. Worried? You should be.

When it comes to communication that isn’t text-based, however, I believe that you will always be superior to A.I., and here’s why:

  • You create rapport instantly. Even via video, your facial expressions and mannerisms create an invaluable connection with your audience.
  • You’re quirky, surprising, funny and interesting (yes, even you). Interesting communication wins. Boring communication fails.
  • You have context, history and stories. You may feel that the negatives within your background are a weakness, but they’re actually a strength, because they make you relatable.

I believe that automated attempts to copy human traits will always fall flat (see Seteve Buscemi’s ‘How do you do, fellow kids?’ from 30 Rock) due to the huge complexity and nuance in all our non-verbal cues.

Any business cost reductions gained from using A.I. to replace human interaction come at a far greater cost: connection. A.I. may be smart, but you can’t fool us, and we hate attempts to deceive us. The businesses that remember the infinite game – that of serving customers, not making profit – will be the ultimate winners.

* I hate real robots. They’re rubbish. Sorry.
